Big Sean & Hit-Boy Drop Collab EP “What You Expect”

Last Friday, under his own Def Jam imprint, Big Sean released his long awaited EP, “What You Expect.” Produced by Hit-Boy, a close collaborator of Big Sean for years, the project was his first since leaving GOOD Music and starting his own ventures.

Consisting of six tracks featuring a guest list with the likes of Bryson Tiller and Lil Durk along with Detroit natives 42 Dugg and Babyface Ray, this is Big Sean’s first release since his 2020 album, “Detroit 2,” which was exclusively produced by himself, Hit-Boy and Kanye West.

Standout tracks include “What A Life” and “Loyal to a Fault” featuring both Bryson Tiller and Lil Durk. In “What A Life,”” Big Sean boasts about the lavishness and freedom he enjoys in his life while also managing his focus and determination that has lifted him to this point. This all lies over a booming beat that is reminiscent of the production we heard on Detroit 2. “Loyal to Fault” features Sean, Tiller, & Durk discussing the struggles of being loyal in a social landscape where loyalty is often taken for granted.

After years of work together  Sean explained in an interview with GQ that he didn’t have any issues with GOOD Music but that it was just time for him to start taking a bigger cut from his own music releases. Both Big Sean and Hit Boy got their start with GOOD Music but have since left the label imprint to take more control over their respective careers. One of their earliest collaborations was their song “Clique,” which also featured hip hop heavy weights Jay-Z and Kanye West. In recent years the duo has started working together much closer. Based on the interview they did together recently with GQ it is fair to assume this duo won’t be slowing down anytime soon.
